How to Migrate Time Tracker Data to Another Server

This procedure describes how to migrate group data from one Time Tracker server to another. For example, if you use a hosted Time Tracker and want to migrate to your own installation or the other way around.

This procedure is a two-step operation:

• Export group data from the source server to an XML file.
• Import group data from the XML file to the target server.

Requirements

Before you start migrating the data, make sure that:

• Both servers run the same version of Time Tracker. For best results, you would want an exact match up to the build number. This migration procedure may also work between slightly different versions. However, the more the difference is between versions, the greater is a chance to see problems. In this case you will need to update one of the servers.
• Manager role on the source server is required to export data.
• Admin role on the target server is required for import a group.
• Logins that you import must not exist on the target server. If one of them already exists, import fails.

Exporting Time Tracker Data to XML

Here are the steps to export group data:

• Login to the source server as a manager or top manager.
• Go to the Export tab.
• Click the Export group button.

• Save the group_data.xml file. If you look inside you should see group-related data in it.

Importing Data to Another Server

Once you have the XML file, you can import the data to another server. Here are the steps:

• Login as admin to your target server. Type admin in the Login field on the login page and admin's password in the Password field. Note that the default value for admin's password is "secret" without quotes.
• Go to the Groups tab. Click on the Import group button on the bottom.

• Now, import group data from the XML file created in the first step. Once you see the Import completed successfully message as on the screenshot below, you are ready to use the data on the target server. Logout and login as a user at this point.
